Welcome to the wild side of Kenya. Tsavo East National Park is one of the country's largest protected wilderness areas, famous for its red-earth landscapes, impressive elephant herds and wide-open savannah.
The park is often called the Theatre of the Wild, and it is easy to understand why. Its semi-arid plains, rocky outcrops, acacia bushland and the Galana River create a striking setting for a safari. Keep your camera ready as you explore a landscape where elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras and many other animals roam freely.
Tsavo East is particularly well known for its red elephants. Their distinctive colour comes from dusting and bathing in the park's red soil – a memorable sight for anyone visiting this part of Kenya.
1. Go on a game drive
A game drive is one of the best ways to experience Tsavo East. Explore the open plains and bushland in search of elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and antelopes. Early mornings and late afternoons are rewarding times to be out exploring, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.
2. Visit the Galana River and Lugard Falls
The Galana River brings a beautiful contrast to Tsavo's dry landscape. At Lugard Falls, the water flows through unusual rock formations, creating a series of rapids worth stopping to admire. It is also a good place to appreciate the relationship between the river and the wildlife that depends on it.
3. Explore Mudanda Rock
Mudanda Rock is a long rocky formation overlooking a natural water catchment. It offers a different perspective of the park and can be a rewarding stop for photography and wildlife observation.
4. Enjoy birdwatching and wildlife photography
With its varied habitats and extensive birdlife, Tsavo East is a wonderful destination for bird enthusiasts. Bring binoculars and a camera to capture the scenery, birds and wildlife encounters along the way. The park has recorded more than 500 bird species.
Tsavo East offers a sense of space that is difficult to capture in photographs. The red soil, expansive plains and scattered rocky formations give the park a character all its own. Its famous elephants are a major attraction, but the experience goes beyond wildlife sightings: it is also about travelling through one of Kenya's great wilderness landscapes.
It is a strong choice for travellers who enjoy classic game drives, photography and a safari that can be combined with Kenya's southern and coastal destinations.
Tsavo East can be visited throughout the year.
June to October: The drier conditions can make wildlife easier to spot around water sources.
November to December: Short rains may bring fresh greenery and attractive photographic conditions.
January to March: Often warm and dry, offering good opportunities for game viewing.
April to May: The long-rains period can make some roads muddy or challenging, so a suitable safari vehicle and route planning are important.
Wildlife viewing and road conditions vary with rainfall and season.
Tsavo East is accessible by road, air and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
From Nairobi: The park can be accessed through Mtito Andei Gate, approximately 233 km south of Nairobi.
From Mombasa: Visitors can access the park through gates along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway, including Bachuma and Voi gates.
From the coast: Travellers coming from Malindi can use the western road towards Sala Gate.
By air: Several airstrips serve different sections of the park.
By SGR: You can travel from Nairobi to Voi or Miasenyi stations and arrange onward transfers into the park.
There are several accommodation options in and around Tsavo East, ranging from safari lodges to tented camps and campsites. Options listed by Kenya Wildlife Service include Voi Safari Lodge, Ashnil Aruba Lodge, Satao Camp and Ndololo Public Campsite. Availability and booking arrangements should be confirmed before travel.
Make your Kenyan safari even more memorable by combining Tsavo East with other destinations:
Tsavo West National Park: Experience a contrasting landscape of volcanic hills, natural springs and rugged scenery.
Amboseli National Park: Add elephant encounters and views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary: Include a private conservation experience in the wider Tsavo region.
Diani Beach: Finish your safari with some time along the Indian Ocean.
